New Zealand Community Trust Junior Boys’ Cup National Cricket Finals Tournament
Day 4 – Wednesday 25 March
Auckland Grammar are the latest New Zealand Community Trust Junior Boys’ champions after a thrilling one wicket win over Christchurch Boys’ High School in the final at Owen Delany Park in Taupo.
1st vs 2nd : Christchurch Boys’ High School vs Auckland Grammar School
Toss: Auckland Grammar won the toss and elected to bowl
Christchurch Boys High School 136-9 (Taylor 40 no, Black 3-28) lost to Auckland Grammar School 137-9 (Mitch Ross 4-11) by 1 wicket
In a low scoring but tense match Christchurch battled through to 136 for nine, largely thanks to a ninth wicket partnership between Tom Taylor and Matthew Long.
Auckland struggled in reply with tight and accurate bowling by the Christchurch bowlers keeping them to 70 for eight. Two late partnerships between Burkin and Isuru Gamage and then Burkin and Michael Black wrestled the match back in Auckland’s favour to seal a one wicket win with just four balls to spare.
3rd vs 4th : Hamilton Boys High School vs Palmerston North Boys High School

Palmerston North Boys High School 115 (Noema-Barnett 42, Ricahrds-Coxhead 4-15) lost to Hamilton Boys High School 116-2 (Santner 54 no) by 8 wickets
After a positive start, Palmerston lost their way to be all out for 115. Arana Noema-Barnett was the stand out batsman with 42 and Hamilton bowler Te Raina Richards-Coxhead returned tidy figures of four for 15. In reply, Hamilton cruised to an eight wicket win with Elliot Santner guiding his team home with an unbeaten 54.
5th vs 6th : Scots College vs John McGlashan College

Scots College 141-7 (Ravi 45) beat John McGlashan College 83 (Dylan Oakes 3-12) by 58 runs
Scott College batsman Ravi led the way with a classy 45 and featured in a 50 run partnership with Kyle Tonks. Their useful total of 141 for seven was never threatened by McGlashan College who struggled to build any meaningful partnership and were eventually bundled out for 83.
7th vs 8th : Wanganui Collegiate School vs St Peters School
Toss: St Peters won the toss and elected to bat
St Peters School 234-2 (Seifert 142 no) beat Wanganui Collegiate School 148 (Seifert 3-23) by 86 runs
St Peters School blasted their way to the highest total of the tournament and only lost two wickets in the process. The bulk off the runs came from Tim Seifert who put on an amazing display of power hitting, lashing his way to an all time tournament record of 142 not out and taking the St Peters total through an impregnable 234 for two. Wanganui never seriously challenged the formidable total and were 148 all out.

Day 3 – Wednesday 24 March
On a rain-affected day at Owen Delany Park in Taupo, all matches in today’s final round of pool play were reduced.
Solid wins for Auckland Grammar and Christchurch Boys High School see the two teams go through pool play unbeaten and face each other in tomorrows final.
The other playoffs will see Hamilton Boys High School and Palmerston Boys High School contest 3rd and 4th places, John McGlashan College and Scots College 4th and 5th places, while Wanganui Collegiate School and St Peters School play off for 6th and 7th.
Pool A:
Palmerston North Boys High School vs Auckland Grammar School
Toss: Palmerston North won the toss and elected to bat
Palmerston North Boys High School 102 (Hall 3-8) lost to Auckland Grammar School 106-3 (James Parslow 26*) by 7 wickets
Palmerston North made a conservative start, reaching just 45 for three from the first 18 overs before rain stopped play. The match was reduced to 30 overs per side and this sparked the Palmerston North batsmen into life with 57 added from the final 12 overs to finish on 102. Auckland Grammar opening bowler Jamie Hall was accurate and economical, finishing with three for eight. The Auckland Grammar were never in trouble with a controlled run chase seeing them knock off the runs with seven wickets in hand and more than two overs to spare.
St Peters School vs John McGlashan College

St Peters School 107 (Seifert 50; Davis 6-11) lost to John McGlashan College 109-4 (Burrow 35, Rae 25*) by 6 wickets
The match was reduced to a 24 over affair after rain stopped play during the first innings. St Peters captain, Tim Seifert led from the front with a well compiled half century to take his team to a respectable 107. John McGlashan College’s Ed Davis was outstanding with the ball, taking six wickets for only 11 runs. In reply John McGlashan cruised to a six wicket win thanks to a 40 run stand between Michael Rae (25*) and Cameron Burrow 35).

Hamilton Boys High School vs Christchurch Boys High School
Toss: Christchurch BHS won the toss and elected to bowl
Hamilton Boys High School 102 (Carstensen 35*, Benton 3-18) lost to Christchurch Boys High School 106-4 (MacKenzie 49; Te Arina Richards-Coxhead 3-28) by 6 wickets
The loss of early wickets didn’t allow Hamilton to build momentum as they slumped to 50 for four when rain stopped play. The match was reduced to 35 overs per side leaving Hamilton with just 11 overs to bat when play resumed. Maison Carstensen accelerated the run rate with an unbeaten 35 and propelled Hamilton through to 102. Jeremy Beaton was the best of the Christchurch attack with three for 18. In reply, Christchurch made easy work of the run chase, reaching the target with just four wickets down and 11 overs to spare. Ruaridh MacKenzie was the hero for Christchurch with a match winning 49 from only 51 deliveries.
Scots College vs Wanganui Collegiate School

Scots College 109-5 (Bradley 52) beat Wanganui Collegiate School 106 (Patton 4-19) by 3 runs
In a match full of tension, Scots College won the toss and decided to bat. They hit their way to 109 for five in a rained reduced match of 24 overs. Scots opener, Robbie Bradley made the bulk of the runs with a fine 52 off of 60 balls. In reply Wanganui lost wickets regularly but remained in the hunt until the very last over when they were bowled out just three runs short of their target. Scot’s bowler Campbell Patton caused most of the damage with four for 19.

The matches today saw Auckland Grammar and Palmerston North consolidate their position at the top of the Pool A table with Christchurch Boys High School and Hamilton Boys High School clear at the top of Pool B.
The unbeaten teams from both pools play off against each other tomorrow to determine who goes on to play the final on Thursday.
Pool A:
Auckland Grammar School vs John McGlashan College
Toss: John McGlashan College won the toss and elected to bat
John McGlashan College 98 (Pearce-Smith 34; Fraser 4-19) lost to Auckland Grammar School 99 / 1 (Campbell Thompson 33*, Taffarel Monterio 30*) by 9 wickets
After a solid third wicket partnership of 61 runs between Chris Pearce-Smith and Ben Baker John McGlashan lost there last seven wickets for 27 runs and were bowled out for 98 in the 28th over. Auckland’s left arm spinner, MacKenzie Fraser was the pick of the bowlers taking four for 19. Auckland Grammar only lost one wicket as they easily chased down the total with Campbell Thompson (33*) and Taffarel Monterio (30*) getting the bulk of their 99 runs.
Palmerston North Boys High School vs St Peters School
Toss: Palmerston North won the toss and elected to bat.
Palmerston North Boys High School 225 / 5 (Noema-Barnett 85, Leenards 43, Keenan 38) beat St Peters School 66 / 8 by 159 runs.
Palmerston North recorded a 159 victory over St Peters School in a one sided match. Jack Leenards and Brandon Keenan got Palmerston North off to a flyer with a 82 runs opening stand. With a solid platform in place day one centurion, Arana Noema-Barnett, was able to play freely. The hard hitting batsmen struck 13 boundaries in his 85 runs, steering his team through to a formidable 225 in their 40 overs. St Peters were never in the hunt thanks to tight and accurate bowling from Palmerston North’s attack. When rain ended the game St Peters were 66 for 8.
Christchurch Boys High School vs Wanganui Collegiate School

Wanganui Collegiate School 105 / 9 (Robson 44; Rykers 4-30) lost to Christchurch Boys High School 106 / 1 (Anthony Burnett 48*, Hamish Donkers 44*) by 9 wickets
Wanganui lost wickets at regular intervals and without a fine 44 from captain Charlie Robson they wouldn’t have past the hundred mark. Christchurch bowler William Ryker ran through the Wanganui line up, taking four wickets and reducing them to a paltry 105 for nine. A superb 48 not out from Antony Burnett and unbeaten 44 from Hamish Donkers sealed comfortable nine wicket win.
Hamilton Boys High School vs Scots College

Scots College 88 (Ravi 37, Santner 4-17, Richards-Coxhead 4-20) lost to Hamilton Boys High School 90 / 5 (East 25*; Ravi 5-28) by 5 wickets
Scots College made a determined start and were looking on track for a decent total at 54 for two with opener Chandler Ravi leading the way with a fine 37. The Hamilton bowlers then took control, ripping through the middle and lower order to bundle Scots out for 88. The chief destroyers were Elliott Santner and Te Raina Richards-Coxhead taking 4-17 and 4-20 respectively. There were some jitters in the Hamilton run chase with the loss of early wickets but Mitchell East steadied the innings and guided his team home with an unbeaten 25. Scots all rounder Ravi backed up his fine batting by taking five for 28 with the ball in a losing effort.

Day 1 – Monday 22 March
The first round of the finals tournament of the New Zealand Community Trust Junior Boys’ cricket competition got underway in cool conditions at Owen Delany Park in Taupo today.
This is the seventh year of this competition for year 9 and 10 students. From the over 161 original school entries the competition has narrowed down to this finals tournament which comprises eight teams – the winning schools from each major cricket association together with the runners-up of the two associations with the largest number of entries.
The teams are divided into two pools of four teams. Over the first three days the teams play round robin matches in their pools. The teams are then ranked in their pools before playing crossover matches on day four to determine the champion team for 2008/09. Matches are of 40 overs duration.
Pool A:
Auckland Grammar School vs St Peter’s School
Toss: St Peter’s won the toss and elected to bat
St Peter’s School 133 (Thomasen 35, Tim Seifert 29, Black 5-22) lost to Auckland Grammar School 135 / 2 (Parslow 66*, Monterio 42*, Thomasen 2-34) by eight wickets.
St Peter’s won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked flat and hard. After losing an early wicket Jason Thomasen and Josh Oakley consolidated with a 55 run stand for the second wicket before Oakley was dismissed. St Peter’s struggled to create any meaningful partnerships from that point on and ended up losing their last seven wickets for just 12 runs. Michael Black for Auckland Grammar was the pick of the bowlers with five for 22. In reply, Auckland Grammar cruised to an eight wicket win thanks to an unbeaten 111 runs third wicket partnership between Taffarel Monterio and James Parslow.
Palmerston North Boys High School vs John McGlashan College
Toss: Palmerston North BHS won the toss and elected to bat
Palmerston North Boys High School 278 / 5 (Noema-Barnett 117*, Leenards 76) beat John McGlashan College 86 (Sam Rowley 32, Corey Perrett 3-2D, Daniel Moore 3-23) by 192 runs.
Palmerston North Boys High made a 278 for five with the bulk of the runs coming from a second wicket partnership of 166 between captain Arana Noema-Barnett and Jack Leenards. Noema-Barnett broke the record for the highest individual score at the final’s tournament reaching 117 not out. Leenards supported well with a well complied 76. In reply John McGlashan struggled to create partnership and ended up being bowled out for 86.

Christchurch Boys High School vs Scots College
Toss: Scots College won the toss and elected to bowl
Christchurch Boys High School 185 (Campbell 38, Lawrence 3-23, Ravi 3-29) beat Scots College 132 (Ravi 42, Benton 6-18) by 53 runs.
Christchurch Boys made a tentative start after being put into at on a slow, damp pitch. They eked their way to 109 for 7 before Nathan Campbell (38) anchored the last part of the innings to help Christchurch through to a respectable total of 185 all out. This included an eighth wicket stand of 45 runs between Harry Kennedy and Grayson Papatua. For Scots, Chandler Ravi and Joshua Lawrence were the pick of the bowlers taking three for 29 and three for 23 respectively. The Scots reply got off to a positive start with an opening partnership of 41. However from that point on wickets fell regularly and Scots were eventually bundled out for 132. Christchurch captain Jeremy Benton led the bowling attach and finished with impressive figures of six for 18.
Hamilton Boys High School vs Wanganui Collegiate School

Hamilton Boys High School 206 / 7 (Kearney 85, Charlie Robson 3-31) beat Wanganui Collegiate School 106 (Santner 3-10) by 100 runs.
Hamilton Boys High School were in trouble early, losing two wickets cheaply before Jonty Kearney came to the wicket and anchored the innings with a fine 85. This helped them through to an imposing 206 from their 40 overs. Wanganui never threatened the total as their total contribution was just 106. Elliot Santner did most of the damage for Hamilton with tidy figures of three for ten from eight overs.
